Catherine Avaltierra, the middle child of the Avaltierra family, is considered the most timid family member of the occult clan. She was the last of the family to conjure a servant demon. The woman was always considered the oddball of the family and the most disconnected from their dark magic practices. While the rest of the family members were affixed to learning dark arts and blood magic, she preferred the company of the creatures outdoors. Some outside clans surmised she was more attuned to the elemental affinity of the Avaltierra clan residing across the sea.
The rising threats of the church against the magical practitioners on the continent pushed the other family members to urge Catherine to summon her own demon to bolster their defenses for the family with their roster of demons under their employ. While disinterested in the dark arts, Catherine obliged to her family’s needs. Within the summoning parlor of the Avaltierra estate, Catherine conjured her demon using a slab of rose quartz and a chain of unrefined opal. The summoning took place during a sunny afternoon in the summer, uneventful and commonplace. Through the slab of quartz emerged a small statured demon with a wild black mane and irises so light blue, they can be mistaken for white. There is a juvenile quality to the demon’s face, immature and mischievous yet playful. She wore an ill-fitted button-up shirt with the sleeves much longer than her arms and the cuffs going past her hands. The collar was unbuttoned and the thin black ribbon that was meant to tie the collar together was lopsided and loose. Her skirt was pleated and black with a white and grey plaid pattern. She wore black, clunky, platform boots and the top laces at her shins were loosely undone to mimic her collar ribbon. Catherine named the off-beat demon Yvetta.
Compared to the rest of the Avaltierra demons, Yvetta by appearances is the slovenliest. She is often scolded by masters, mistresses and their demons to ‘tidy up’ in her appearance. Much like her mistress Catherine, she is aloof in her demeanor and is unphased by the general disapproval of her peers when it comes to her self-presentation.
Yvetta’s demon magic specializes in illusions, glamours and prophetic visions. Her timely arrival as the last demon to be summoned proved to be instrumental in keeping the Avaltierra estate hidden from the neighboring towns and small villages that eventually took issue with the family and their dealings. When the Avaltierras were no longer tolerated as an occult clan by the humans, Yvetta cast a several-acre-wide shroud to conceal their property. Additionally, travelers intersecting the path to the estate would fall victim to the residual effects of Yvetta’s illusion and experience an entranced state, urging them to turn back or go around the premises. Humans would awaken from the head fog, disoriented and confused but mainly unharmed and continuing their way.
Of her six siblings, Yvetta is closest to her older sibling, Henri, The Beast of Many. The sibling she least tolerates is her older sister after her, Ayun, The Shadow Weaver.
